What we love about Walmart is that you can find just about anything there, including cheap healthy foods. Throughout the grocery aisle, you’ll find healthy snacks, healthy lunch ideas and, of course, healthy breakfast foods. And if you think you already know what you should eat in the morning to start the day off right, there’s always the opportunity to learn new dishes and ideas.
Chilly winter mornings call for cozy breakfasts. What many of us also need in the morning is something quick and easy. But there’s no need to sacrifice your healthy diet in the name of speed or price. So for some dietitian-recommended breakfast foods you can get at Walmart that are convenient and/or quick and economical, keep reading for some ideas. (And for more insight into what’s happening at the warehouse, here are 6 things you’ll see at Costco this year.)
These frozen sandwiches with turkey sausage and egg whites is a quick and delicious way to start the day. They also cost around $7 a box, which is considerably cheaper than grabbing a breakfast sandwich at a coffee shop.
“With 18g of protein and 2g of fiber, it’s a great way to start the day that will leave you feeling full and energized,” says Courtney Pelitera MS, RDN, owner of Devour your life Nutrition. And while these contain a little more sodium than is ideal for an everyday breakfast, they’re fine in a pinch on days when you can reduce the sodium in other meals.
That oatmeal at Walmart comes in a variety of flavors and is the perfect cozy breakfast on a cold winter day. It’s also a very affordable meal that the whole family can eat.
“It gives you the whole grain with the added fiber and protein,” says Marissa Kai Miluk MS, RDN, LD. “It also helps give your brain the energy you need for the day as well as the carbs you need. It helps stabilize your blood sugar with fiber and protein.”
You can also top the oats with more fruits and nuts for a heartier breakfast.
If you want a quick grab-and-go option, an Rxbar is exactly that. You can store a few in your car or office for those days when you have to run out before having a real breakfast. A box of 10 costs around $15, while boxes of four cost around $7.
“Rxbars contains the perfect blend of protein, fats, and carbohydrates to start your day off right nutritionally,” says Jenny Champion MS RD CPT, of cleaning club. “They are also a fantastic deal!”
This delicious breakfast is packed with protein, which is always smart for the morning. You’ll start your day off right and stay full until lunchtime, and you won’t break the bank.
“The 14g of protein and 3g of fiber will help keep you full and focused through the morning,” says Pelitera. “Top them with some fruit or yogurt for a really nutrient-dense breakfast!”
Boxes of 10 cost less than $5 at your local Walmart.
As Champion says, some of Mother Nature’s healthiest options are the simplest. Take a bag of $4 macadamia nuts at Walmart and pair a small handful with a banana in the morning, and you’ve got a pretty full breakfast at a great price. You can also put the nuts on plain fat-free Greek yogurt and have your banana on the side if you want something a little more hearty.
